In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic first affected the county. As of April 22nd there are a total of 25,276 cases, 838 deaths and 9,371 recoveries. The town of New Rochelle later in March (the 10th) had a state government-ordered one square mile "containment zone" in the northern part of that town. Part of New Rochelle is adjacent to The Bronx, where the majority of New York State's COVID-19 positive cases are (as of May 8th, 350,000 out of 20 million residents). As of May 22, 2020, there were between 30 and 35,000 cases going both by COVID-19 testing and serological samples, constituting the highest number of highest per capita infections in the world: 3% out of 1 million residents.
